Brittney Griner will depart Phoenix to join the Atlanta Dream on a one-year deal after spending 11 seasons with the Mercury. The 10-time WNBA All-Star tested free agency for the first time this offseason, where she will team up with Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray in Atlanta.
Griner, who was released from her detention in Russia last summer, averaged a career-high 17.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game with the Mercury before missing the 2022 campaign due to the detained incident. She will leave Phoenix as the team’s top rebounder and scorer, leaving behind a franchise entering a new era without her leadership.
The Mercury is also losing Diana Taurasi, a three-time WNBA champion and all-time scoring leader, who has been contemplating retirement this offseason. The Dream recently signed five-time All-Star Alyssa Thomas and announced the signing of Ty Harris to their roster in Phoenix.
With Griner’s arrival, the Dream aims to build a strong contender group with her impact, joining a franchise that finished 15-25 last season but made the playoffs for two consecutive years under a new coaching staff led by Karl Smesko.
Griner and her new teammates will look to bring home their first championship in Atlanta.
