Apple has recently released a new update on its compliance with the European Union’s digital markets act (DMA). The company’s latest document outlines its ongoing efforts to meet regulatory requirements, but it also reveals plans to introduce default app settings for navigation and translation.
In spring 2025, Apple will add support for setting defaults for navigation apps, allowing iPhone users in the EU to choose from multiple providers. This change comes after years of user requests for Google Maps to be set as the default navigation app. Although Apple Maps has improved over time, many users still prefer third-party options like Google Maps.
The company also plans to enable default settings for translation apps, which is a welcome change. The introduction of these features is expected to arrive in iOS 18.4, scheduled to debut in April.
Interestingly, some default app categories that were initially exclusive to the EU will be supported worldwide starting with iOS 18.2. This includes messaging and calling apps.
While Apple hasn’t confirmed whether its navigation and translation defaults will also be available globally, it would be a positive move if they do. Users can now look forward to having more control over their default apps on their iPhones.
