Pertussis Outbreak at Jenkins Middle School Raises Concerns

Families at Jenkins Middle School received notice of a whooping cough outbreak. The health department defines an outbreak as two or more cases within the same time frame. Symptoms include runny nose, coughing fits, vomiting, and breathlessness. Parents are encouraged to contact their child’s healthcare provider if these symptoms appear. The disease tends to be cyclical, with previous outbreaks in 2017 and late 2024. The district is working closely with health officials, and the number of cases remains small at this time. Vaccination is recommended but not foolproof. Past state-wide cases reached 96 in 2024 and 762 throughout Colorado.
