T-Mobile is planning to offer its cellular Starlink service as a free perk for customers on more expensive plans, once it becomes commercially available in the US. The carrier’s CEO, Mike Sievert, discussed this plan during a Wednesday earnings call.
Sievert believes that offering Starlink will be a compelling reason for customers to upgrade to pricier plans and stay connected in cellular dead zones. The technology currently only supports SMS texts but will eventually power voice calling and internet downloads.
T-Mobile aims to differentiate itself from other carriers by providing this service, which Sievert calls “the idea of being connected everywhere.” He envisions customers who can see the sky as being fully connected.
In addition to offering Starlink on expensive plans, T-Mobile will also provide it as a paid add-on through “a la carte sales.” No exact price has been announced, but the carrier expects this option to appeal to those who don’t have the plans that include it.
T-Mobile began beta tests of the cellular Starlink system earlier this month, with customers signing up for free on its website. The initial test was limited to five Samsung models, but T-Mobile expanded the program to iPhones running iOS 18.3 in recent weeks.
