Game developer Midnight Society has announced that it will be shutting down after three years of development on its NFT-infused shooter Deadrop. The studio, which was co-founded by popular livestreamer Guy “Dr Disrespect” Beahm, had been working on the game since 2021 and attracted a team of experienced developers from games like Call of Duty and Halo.
However, the project faced controversy over its blockchain elements, with some critics expressing concerns about the use of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in the game. Despite this, Dr Disrespect’s departure from the company last month added to the project’s uncertainty.
The studio recently went through a significant round of layoffs, suggesting that it was running out of funds. Now, Midnight Society is seeking new employment opportunities for its talented team members and has expressed gratitude to its community for their support.
This latest studio closure joins a growing list of game developers struggling in recent months, including the developer behind Dauntless and Rocksteady, which suffered cutbacks after the underperformance of Suicide Squad Kill The Justice League.
