Russia claimed that a nuclear power plant was targeted during a massive Ukrainian drone attack on Wednesday. The Russian Ministry of Defence said 104 drones were involved in raids across western Russia, with many targeting power and oil facilities.
One drone attempted to strike the Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant, but air defense systems destroyed it before it could cause damage. There were no casualties or damage reported at the plant.
The attack comes amid ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with the two countries exchanging daily barrages of drones and missiles. Energy infrastructure has been a particular target in the conflict, which began in February 2022.
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that his country could hold peace talks with Ukraine, but ruled out speaking directly with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The US President-elect Donald Trump has revived hopes for a ceasefire, but Kyiv warned against being excluded from any peace talks between Russia and the US.
The conflict in eastern Europe remains a major concern, with warnings that it could spark a nuclear disaster. Ukraine’s military reported an overnight drone attack of its own, targeting a port in the Odesa region and causing air alerts in multiple regions.
