The Video Game History Foundation (VGHF) has launched its digital archive, providing unprecedented access to 30,000 indexed files, including artwork, promotional material, and searchable magazine archives. This initial release features rare game development materials, such as the Myst series’ production files, Tom Payne’s Sonic concept art, and design files.
The VGHF’s head librarian, Phil Salvador, credits this launch as a labor of love, stemming from the organization’s 2017 inception. However, it marks only the beginning of its digitization process, aiming to catalog unprocessed physical materials for wider access.
Notably, the VGHF does not require special credentials or accounts, allowing anyone to explore its archives. Despite server issues on launch day, enthusiasts are already sharing library-derived information and insights, showcasing the foundation’s potential to democratize gaming history research.
