Actress Karla Sofía Gascón is facing backlash on social media after old posts surfaced, which appear to express anti-Muslim views and make racist comments. The posts were largely posted between 2020 and 2021 and have been widely shared online.
In one of the posts, dated November 22, 2020, Gascón expressed surprise at the number of Muslim women in Spain, stating that they “wear their hair covered and skirts down to their heels.” Another post from September 2, 2020, attached to a photo of a Muslim family, reads: “Islam is marvelous, without any machismo. Women are respected, and when they are so respected they are left with a little squared hole on their faces for their eyes to be visible and their mouths.”
Gascón also made comments about George Floyd, stating that “very few people ever cared about him” and implying that black people are considered monkeys. In another post, she suggested that social classes may be more of a factor in conflicts than racism.
The actress’s stance on the Oscars ceremony from 2021 has also been criticized. She tweeted that the event was “looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films” and made comments about the diversity of attendees.
Spokespeople for Gascón have not responded to requests for comment, while Netflix and the Academy had no comment on the matter.
