Norovirus Still Spreads in LA County, What You Need to Know

LA County is still grappling with the norovirus outbreak, which has been spreading rapidly since peak season began. The highly contagious illness, also known as the “stomach flu,” can cause severe symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps.

According to Dr. Elizabeth Hudson, regional chief of infectious diseases for Kaiser Permanente Southern California, norovirus is a leading cause of gastrointestinal illnesses in the US. The virus spreads quickly in tight areas and can be difficult to track due to underreported cases.

Recent wastewater monitoring shows significant norovirus activity locally, with high levels detected at the Hyperion Water Reclamation plant and medium levels at the A.K. Warren Water Resource Facility. Experts warn that the virus can spread through sharing bathrooms, eating contaminated foods, and touching unclean surfaces.

If you’re experiencing symptoms of norovirus, it’s essential to isolate yourself and take precautions to prevent further transmission. Dr. Hudson recommends washing your hands frequently with soap and water, followed by a disinfectant wipe, and wearing masks when caring for others.

The dehydration risk is significant, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children under 5 and adults over 65. Medical help may be needed if symptoms worsen or if you experience extreme dizziness. Experts recommend using oral rehydration salts to help manage dehydration.

As the outbreak continues, health officials urge residents to stay vigilant and take steps to prevent further transmission.
