NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore have made history by becoming the first astronauts to perform a spacewalk together after being stuck in orbit for nearly eight months. The pair, who are both retired Navy captains, floated out of the International Space Station on Thursday to perform maintenance work and clean the station’s exterior.
Their extended stay was initially expected to last just one week when they arrived at the space station last June, but a series of problems with their spacecraft, Boeing’s Starliner capsule, forced NASA to return it empty. Now, Williams and Wilmore are waiting for SpaceX to bring them home, which is expected to happen in late March or early April.
The two astronauts have previously performed spacewalks during previous stays at the space station, but Thursday’s excursion marked Wilmore’s first time outside this trip.
