The BBC has apologized to staff members who felt they couldn’t raise concerns about comedian and actor Russell Brand due to his status, according to an internal review. An investigation found that only one of eight complaints about Brand’s behavior was formally made to management at the time.
Director of Editorial Complaints Peter Johnston said he’s grateful for those who came forward with their concerns and has apologized on behalf of the BBC. The culture of the time had influenced what was considered acceptable, but many individuals felt unable to speak out against Brand.
The BBC launched an investigation after four women claimed they were sexually assaulted by Brand between 2006 and 2013. Brand denied accusations of rape, assault, and emotional abuse, stating all his relationships were consensual.
Since Brand left the BBC, procedures have changed, including a new process for serious allegations and an anti-bullying and harassment policy. The broadcaster acknowledged that presenters had abused their positions in the past but emphasized these changes aim to prevent similar incidents.
