SNL creator Lorne Michaels has set the record straight about rumors that the show bans musicians. In his new documentary, “Ladies & Gentleman… 50 Years of SNL Music,” Michaels explained the show’s approach to booking musical guests.
Michaels stated that no musician has ever been barred from performing on the show, despite reports suggesting otherwise. He described the show’s mentality as being too crass and opportunistic, with a focus on going for “hot” acts.
Some of the musicians who were reportedly banned from SNL include Elvis Costello, Ashlee Simpson, and SinĂ©ad O’Connor. However, these claims have been disputed by Michaels and others involved in the show.
Costello, who appeared on the show in 1977, claimed that he was not against the show but rather his record company. He performed on SNL again in 1989, 1991, and 1999, where he poked fun at his initial appearance with the Beastie Boys.
Simpson’s lip-sync incident in 2004 was widely criticized, but she has said it taught her humility. Michaels acknowledged that accidents happen during live television and that O’Connor’s provocative gesture in 1992 was admirable for its bravery.
O’Connor’s actions sparked controversy due to the Catholic Church’s alleged cover-up of child abuse allegations. Michaels praised her sincerity and admiration for the artist’s courage.
The documentary “Ladies & Gentleman… 50 Years of SNL Music” is now available on Peacock, offering a new perspective on SNL’s history with music.
