Hello Kitty Island Adventure Review: A Charming but Flawed Life Sim

Hello Kitty Island Adventure, now available on Nintendo Switch and Windows PC, has finally arrived after its exclusive debut as an Apple Arcade game. While it may not translate perfectly to console and PC platforms, this charming life sim is a must-play for Sanrio fans and those who enjoy cozy games.

The game’s mobile-first design has its quirks, particularly with the sense of time mechanics, which can be confusing at times. However, these departures from traditional life sim gameplay are refreshing in other ways, such as the absence of a traditional currency system. Instead, players swap less valuable items for more valuable ones, making progress feel more organic.

Friendships and relationships in Hello Kitty Island Adventure are simple to level up, with tags denoting each character’s preferences, eliminating the need for trial and error or guide-keeping. The game also features a unique “grind” mechanic based on real-life time passing, which can be both tedious and addictive.

While not perfect, Hello Kitty Island Adventure has won over this reviewer with its delightful Sanrio fan-service and charming gameplay mechanics like fishing and minigames. With updates likely to emerge, the game’s mobile version may differ from the console version more in the future.

Hello Kitty Island Adventure will be released on January 30 for Nintendo Switch and Windows PC.
