Mediterranean Diet Linked to Improved Memory and Brain Health

A recent study published in Gut Microbe Reports found that a Mediterranean-style diet can improve memory through balanced bacteria in the gut. Researchers at Tulane University School of Medicine discovered that rats fed a Mediterranean diet over 14 weeks showed increases in four types of beneficial gut bacteria and decreases in five other types, compared to those on a Western diet high in saturated fat.

The rats then underwent maze challenges to test their memory, with those on the Mediterranean diet exhibiting improved performance. The study’s lead author concluded that individuals who follow the Mediterranean diet develop different gut bacteria patterns, which are associated with learning and memory.

The Mediterranean diet has been shown to improve cognitive flexibility and working memory, while also maintaining lower levels of “bad” cholesterol. Nutritionists and experts agree that a balanced diet can profoundly impact gut microbiome and, in turn, cognitive performance. The study’s findings support the 50% lower risk of cognitive decline and dementia associated with Mediterranean diet.

To adopt a more Mediterranean-style diet, experts suggest simple steps such as swapping butter for olive oil, adding veggies to meals, experimenting with plant-based proteins, enjoying fish a couple times a week, snacking on nuts or fresh fruits, and making nourishing choices accessible.
