Microsoft has made a significant move in the AI industry by offering unlimited access to OpenAI’s o1 model for free through its Copilot platform. The decision was announced via the “Think Deeper” feature, which provides users with an alternative to Copilot’s standard response functionality.
In December, OpenAI released the o1 model, promising it as the most powerful model available, but with a catch: two expensive subscriptions that cost $200 and $20 per month. However, Microsoft has now eliminated this requirement by providing access to the o1 model through its “Think Deeper” feature without any subscription fees.
The “Think Deeper” control is a toggle switch within Copilot’s interface, which users must turn on to utilize the enhanced functionality. This version of Copilot excels at evergreen research and code writing, producing thorough responses after several seconds. Microsoft has stated that it will not charge for this feature via an outright payment or subscription.
This move puts Microsoft in direct competition with OpenAI, which has already announced its o3 model, a more complex AI solution. However, the company’s plans for o3 pricing remain unclear at present.
