Norwegian authorities have seized a Russian-crewed ship suspected of damaging an undersea cable in the Baltic Sea. The vessel, Silver Dania, was found to be at fault after officers boarded the ship and searched for evidence.
The incident is one of several acts of sabotage targeting undersea infrastructure in the region. NATO has stepped up its patrol and surveillance operation in response to these incidents. In 2022, a series of undersea explosions damaged the Nord Stream natural gas pipelines linking Russia to Western Europe.
Norway’s coast guard and police surrounded the Silver Dania on Thursday evening and towed it to the Port of Tromsø. The crew of 11 was questioned about their involvement in the incident. Although no charges have been filed, the ship will be subject to investigation.
The owners of the vessel deny any wrongdoing, stating that they were complying with authorities’ requests. This latest incident adds to growing concerns over sabotage targeting undersea infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.
