Canada is set to impose escalating retaliatory counter-tariffs against US President Donald Trump’s 25% levies on Canadian goods, aiming to shift American public opinion and reduce the country’s dependence on its southern neighbor. The move comes as Canada seeks to protect its industry from perceived unfair trade practices.
Minister of International Trade Chrystia Freeland, who is also a candidate for prime minister, has called for tariffs on US-made Tesla cars in response to the US sanctions. “Goods that are easily substitutable will be targeted first,” she said, indicating that Canada aims to minimize economic disruption while hitting key areas.
