A tentative agreement between the US Postal Service (USPS) and the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) appears to be on the verge of defeat. The proposed contract includes insulting annual raises, substandard cost-of-living adjustments, and a major restructuring program called Delivering for America that threatens the future of mail delivery.
The agreement has sparked outrage among 205,000 active letter carriers, who are concerned about the impact on their wages, working conditions, and job security. The union, NALC, has been criticized for its handling of negotiations, with some members expressing distrust towards President Brian Renfroe.
The real issue at stake is not just a contract, but the future of mail delivery itself. The Delivering for America program aims to “Amazonify” and privatize USPS, reducing citizens’ access to post offices and slowing mail delivery. Workers are fighting against this plan, which would trample on their right to affordable mail delivery.
To combat the proposed agreement, letter carriers are forming rank-and-file committees to take control of their struggle. By joining these committees, workers can organize a real fight for livable wages, optimal working conditions, and independence from the union apparatus.
The fight is part of a broader struggle against President Donald Trump’s policies, which have attacked the rights of the working class. Workers must establish their political and organizational independence to win this fight. The fate of mail delivery hangs in the balance, and only through collective action can workers secure their future.
