Deadly Artillery Shelling in Omdurman Kills 56

A deadly artillery shelling attack on a vegetable market in Omdurman, Sudan has killed at least 56 people and wounded over 158 others. The Health Ministry blamed the attack on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Witnesses described the intense fire from multiple directions, with rockets and artillery shells raining down on the market.

The RSF had been firing from western Omdurman, where it remains in control, and was supported by drones. One resident reported that “rockets and artillery shells are falling” as the militia targeted multiple streets at once.

The attack comes amid a brutal war between the Sudanese army and RSF, which broke out in April 2023 over integration issues. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people, driven millions from their homes, and plunged half of the population into hunger.

In a recent video address, RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo pledged to retake the capital from the army, saying “we expelled them before, and we will expel them again.” The Sudanese army has been reasserting control in Khartoum, pushing the RSF into the city’s outskirts.

The humanitarian situation in Sudan is dire, with entire neighborhoods emptied out and at least 3.6 million people displaced. According to the United Nations, over 106,000 people are suffering from famine in Khartoum, while a further 3.2 million face crisis levels of hunger.
