Bird Flu Outbreak Spreads Across New York State

A growing number of birds in New York have been affected by avian flu since 2022, with recent cases detected in parks, commercial flocks and backyard coops. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports 67 confirmed human cases of bird flu in the US, including one death.

Symptoms of bird flu include:

* Eye redness and irritation
* Mild fever (100°F or higher)
* Cough and sore throat
* Runny nose
* Muscle or body aches
* Headaches
* Fatigue

The virus can spread through contact with infected birds’ saliva, nasal fluid, and feces, as well as through breathing in the air or touching contaminated surfaces.

New York state officials have implemented new testing initiatives on dairy farms and are conducting regular testing and monitoring of commercial poultry farms. The public is urged to report groups of sick or dead birds and avoid contact with bird-related filth and feces.

Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald advises that everyone who has regular contact with livestock and wild birds take precautions by wearing personal protective equipment when interacting with these animals. Governor Kathy Hochul encourages all New Yorkers to remain vigilant and protect themselves from the risk of avian flu.
