Apple has agreed to a $20 million settlement to resolve claims that some Apple Watch batteries swelled over time, potentially damaging other key components, such as the display. The issue affects users who own or owned certain early generation models, including first-generation and series 1, 2, and 3 watches.
The problem, which was identified in 2018, caused cracks or detachments in some displays due to swollen batteries. Apple initially denied acknowledging the issue, but a class action lawsuit was filed alleging that the company was aware of the defects but refusing warranty claims.
To qualify for the settlement, users must have owned an affected Apple Watch model in the US and reported issues related to battery swelling between April 24, 2015, and February 6, 2024. The payout will be between $20 and $50 per claimant, with payments automatically processed by Apple after notification. Eligible owners should click on a link provided by Apple to ensure payment details are up to date by April 10, 2025.
