OpenAI has introduced o3-mini, a cost-efficient reasoning AI model designed to excel in science, math, and coding. The release comes as DeepSeek’s R1 model is shaking up the tech industry with its affordability and efficiency. Analysts have raised questions about OpenAI’s investment strategies following R1’s open-source release.
OpenAI has confirmed that o3-mini is its most cost-efficient model in its reasoning series. Developed to handle complex questions, o3-mini can be set to three levels of reasoning: low, medium, or high, depending on the challenge’s complexity. Users with ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Pro accounts will have access to o3-mini starting Friday, while free plan users can try it out using the “Reason” option.
The move follows a similar trend seen in other companies, which have doubled down on investing heavily in AI. OpenAI is reportedly discussing a $25 billion investment from SoftBank, which could give it a $300 billion valuation.
