Warner Bros. is shutting down its multiplayer game MultiVersus after just one year, citing that season 5 will be the final update. The game’s developers announced on Friday that players can still play offline, but there won’t be refunds for those who spent money on in-game purchases.
Season 5 begins February 4 and runs through May 30, adding characters Aquaman and Lola Bunny. However, this move seems puzzling given the game’s short lifespan. Players will need to download a new update to play offline after season 5 ends, but no further downloads of the game are allowed.
MultiVersus originally launched in 2022, gained popularity briefly before losing players due to lack of content and gameplay balance issues. Warner Bros. relaunched it in 2024 with a new version, but it failed to regain its initial following.
The game’s monetization model was also criticized for being too grindy and expensive. This is the second high-profile game Warner Bros. has abandoned after releasing Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in 2024.
Despite this, MultiVersus developers expressed gratitude for the community’s support, stating that they’re proud of what they built and thankful for player enthusiasm.
