Israel is set to begin negotiations on the second phase of its ceasefire agreement with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet with US President Donald Trump’s Middle East Envoy, Steve Witkoff, on Monday in Washington, marking the start of these talks. The discussions are expected to focus on Israel’s positions regarding the ceasefire.
Last month, Israel and Hamas reached a complex agreement, which has halted fighting in Gaza. In exchange for the release of 18 hostages held by Hamas, hundreds of Palestinians were released from Israeli prisons and detentions. However, over 70 hostages remain in Gaza.
Egypt and Qatar, with backing from Washington, have mediated between Israel and Hamas since August last year. The meetings are part of a three-phase implementation plan for the ceasefire agreement.
