Early 80s Gaming Magazines Revealed in New Digital Library

The Video Game History Foundation has launched a free digital library of documents, magazines, and transcripts related to video games. A collection of early gaming magazines caught the author’s eye, with the earliest issue being Electronic Games from 1981. This magazine features news about McDonald’s exploring computerized ordering systems, including designing a videogame for customers to play while waiting.

The article also touches on the lesser-known fact that George Plimpton was a spokesman for Intellivision and even starred in a print ad for Sonic the Hedgehog. The author shares their personal experience playing Sonic as a photographer’s assistant during college and highlights Martin Amis’s 1982 collection of video game reviews, “Invasion of the Space Invaders.”

The foundation’s digital library is now available to everyone, offering a glimpse into the early days of gaming.
