A Tennessee woman, Kristi Johnson, 50, is sharing the heartwarming story of her late mother’s final wish. In a TikTok video and interview with “Good Morning America,” Johnson revealed that her mom, Rebecca Creager Deatherage, asked her to have knee surgery while she was in hospice care.
Johnson had been putting off the surgery for months, but her mother’s words were clear: if she didn’t get it done, she’d miss taking care of her son. Despite having throat and neck cancer herself, Johnson’s mom insisted on caring for her during her recovery, even going as far as cooking and cleaning her house.
Johnson recounted how her mom would sleep next to her chair, ensuring her comfort while recovering from surgery. She also took photos of her mom, cherishing the time they spent together before it was too late.
Deatherage passed away in July 2021 at the age of 70, after a year in hospice and several months after Johnson had the surgery. The family held a party instead of a funeral to celebrate her life, with decorations featuring her mother’s pictures and artwork, as well as her favorite dishes.
Johnson hopes that others will be inspired by her late mom’s selflessness and kindness. “She let us know that we were loved, and she felt loved,” Johnson said. “That’s really what it’s all about – family, legacy, and kindness.”
