Kohl’s Cuts 400 Jobs at Corporate Headquarters Amid Restructuring

Struggling department store chain Kohl’s Corp. has announced layoffs at its corporate headquarters in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, cutting around 10% of roles that report to the corporate office. The move affects approximately 4,000 employees, resulting in about 400 job losses.

The company cited a “thoughtful, data-informed approach” to improve the business’s long-term sustainability, while also reassuring affected employees that they will receive two weeks’ pay and a competitive severance package.

This latest cut comes after Kohl’s previously announced plans to close 27 stores in 15 states earlier this month. The decision has been attributed to new CEO Ashley Buchanan’s efforts to strengthen the company’s business model for long-term growth.

The restructuring is part of Kohl’s broader efforts to address declining sales and improve its competitive position in the retail market. Despite these challenges, the company remains committed to innovation and customer satisfaction, with plans to build on its strengths and create new initiatives to serve customers better.

CEO Ashley Buchanan has been at the helm for less than two weeks, having taken over from Tom Kingsbury in 2022. The move marks one of the largest job cuts in recent years for Kohl’s, following previous reductions in 2023 and a few dozen positions cut in 2024.
