Australia Floods: One Dead, Thousands Evacuated as Torrential Rains Brought Flash Flooding

A person has died in Australia’s northeast after intense rain triggered massive flash floods that have inundated homes and businesses along the North Queensland coast. The town of Ingham and nearby city of Townsville are heavily impacted.

Residents in low-lying coastal suburbs and towns, including those in the “black zone” area, have been urged to evacuate immediately due to life-threatening flooding conditions. Queensland Premier David Crisafulli confirmed one person died in the flooding in Ingham on Sunday after a rescue boat capsized.

The town is expected to experience its worst flooding in 60 years, with the Herbert River reaching levels similar to those in 1967 during the day. An emergency alert was issued for the Bluewater suburb of Townsville, warning residents their lives may be at risk due to rapid-rising waters.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has offered support and resources to deal with the disaster, while also expressing sympathy for the affected community. Residents are advised to take precautions and prepare for the worst as torrential rain and heavy winds continue through Monday, forecast by the Australian Bureau of Meteorology.
