A temporary outage of the US pilot messaging system may lead to flight delays on Sunday, according to US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. The “Notice to Air Mission” (NOTAM) system, which provides critical safety notices for pilots and air traffic control, has been experiencing technical issues.
The FAA is working to restore the system and has activated a backup plan to minimize disruptions. Passengers are advised to check with their carriers about flight status on Sunday. In a recent NOTAM outage in January 2023, over 11,000 flights were disrupted.
Duffy emphasized that while there is no immediate impact on air traffic control, the FAA will provide updates every 30 minutes on the system’s status. The agency is investigating the cause of the outage and will provide further information as needed.
