Google Partners with Aerospace Corp to Boost Solar Forecasting Accuracy

Google Public Sector is teaming up with The Aerospace Corporation to use artificial intelligence and high-performance computing to predict solar flares and coronal mass ejections more accurately. The goal is to improve forecast accuracy days in advance.

The partnership aims to address the challenge of predicting solar activity, which has proven difficult due to its complexity and large volume of observations. NASA provides about 70,000 daily images, while additional data comes from government agencies including NASA, NOAA, NSF, and ESA.

A key hurdle is training machine-learning models on this vast dataset without bias, a task that requires significant computational power. Google will apply its Vertex AI platform to the problem, making it possible to make meaningful progress in space weather forecasting.

“This collaboration is a game-changer for space weather forecasting,” said Kevin Bell, Aerospace Engineering and Technology Group senior vice president. “We’re strengthening the resilience of critical infrastructure that underpins our modern way of life.”

The partnership has the potential to benefit society as a whole, according to Jim Kelly, Google Public Sector Federal Sales vice president. “This collaboration demonstrates the transformative potential of AI to address national security and societal challenges.”
