OpenAI Unveils Deep Research AI Tool for Online Research

OpenAI has introduced a new AI tool called Deep Research, which can gather information from across the internet and synthesize it into concise reports. The tool is designed to perform complex research tasks in a fraction of the time it would take a human.

Deep Research uses neural networks, similar to ChatGPT’s technology, to analyze data and learn skills by trial and error. This enables it to reason through tasks and make informed decisions. According to Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s chief product officer, Deep Research can accomplish complex research tasks in 5-30 minutes, depending on the complexity.

During a demonstration, Weil showed how the tool gathered information about Albert Einstein and provided a detailed report, including five questions that a senator could ask him during a congressional hearing. The report included citations to support the information.

However, AI researchers note that Deep Research may struggle with distinguishing between authoritative information and rumors or providing accurate citations. OpenAI acknowledges these limitations but believes the tool can still be highly useful for accelerating economic growth in fields like finance, science, and law.

Deep Research will be available to subscribers of ChatGPT Pro, a $200-a-month service, starting Sunday. The company plans to offer it through other paid services as well. This technology is based on OpenAI’s o3 reasoning system and builds upon the success of its previous AI tools.
