New Treatment Option for Depression Shows Promising Results

Triston Albert’s life was forever changed after he began treatment with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) for his treatment-resistant major depressive disorder. Diagnosed at 15, Albert struggled to find relief from the condition, which seemed bleak and long-term.

Fast forward 11 years, and Albert became one of the first northwest Kansas residents to complete a TMS treatment course, showing significant improvements in his symptoms. The innovative treatment has reduced his depressive symptoms by an estimated 60%, allowing him to experience improved mood, energy, and motivation.

TMS uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific areas of the brain involved in mood regulation, typically requiring 36 treatments provided Monday through Friday for about seven weeks. Albert’s experiences with TMS have been life-changing, enabling him to return to work full-time, make new friends, and even crave social interaction.

While Albert notes some minor side effects, such as headaches or twitching, the positives far outweigh the negatives. He feels a sense of debt towards TMS, calling it “revolutionary” and a “gift.” However, the treatment remains largely unaffordable for Kansas Medicaid recipients.

Despite this barrier, TMS has been found highly effective nationally, with 83% of patients reporting symptom reduction and improved functioning. For those struggling with major depressive disorder, Albert’s story offers hope: never give up on trying to manage symptoms and seeking help.
