Karla Sofía Gascón Addresses Racism Allegations in Emotional CNN Interview

Karla Sofía Gascón, a 52-year-old actress nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress, sat down with CNN en Español to discuss the resurfaced social media posts that sparked controversy. The actress, who is also transgender, grew visibly emotional during the hour-long conversation.

Gascón denied being racist and Islamophobic, stating that she has never committed a crime or harmed anyone. She claimed that her words were misconstrued and explained that some of her tweets, including one about George Floyd’s murder, were meant to highlight the struggles faced by people from different backgrounds.

Regarding her alleged tweet against Emilia Pérez co-star Selena Gomez, Gascón denied ever saying it. She also addressed a since-deleted X post where she called Floyd “a drug addict and a hustler,” saying that her words were taken out of context.

The actress claimed to have never caused harm to anyone and stated that what matters most to her is the impact her work has on people’s lives. Gascón expressed sadness over the controversy, which led to death threats and harassment against her.

Her co-star Zoe Saldaña also spoke out about the situation, saying that she is “sad” and doesn’t support negative rhetoric towards any group. The actress emphasized the importance of inclusivity and collaboration in her film industry experiences.
