Meta Platforms has announced plans to spend as much as $65 billion this year to expand its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, aiming to bolster its position in the tech industry. The company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that the investment is crucial for meeting its goal of becoming a leader in AI.
As part of the plan, Meta will hire more AI professionals and build an over 2-gigawatt data center in Manhattan, which would be one of the largest of its kind. The company aims to increase its graphics processors to over 1.3 million by the end of this year.
The investment is also aimed at bringing about significant computing power online, with plans to add 1 gigawatt (GW) of computing power by 2025. Meta’s announcement comes ahead of other tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon, which are also investing heavily in AI infrastructure.
The company’s decision to increase spending on AI infrastructure has been influenced by the recent launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and US President Donald Trump’s Stargate initiative, which aims to invest $500 billion in AI infrastructure across the US. Meta’s investment is seen as a response to the growing competition in the tech industry.
Meta plans to use its AI technology to serve more than 1 billion people worldwide by 2025, with its AI assistant available on various services. The company’s strategy is also different from rivals, as it offers its Llama AI models for free, allowing consumers and businesses to use them easily.
