OpenAI has launched a new AI tool called “Deep Research,” which can conduct multi-step research on the internet for complex tasks. Powered by the upcoming o3 model, Deep Research uses a chatbot to find, analyze, and synthesize online sources such as text, images, and PDFs.
Users simply need to give a prompt, and the tool will generate a comprehensive report at the level of a research analyst in tens of minutes, whereas humans would take many hours. However, OpenAI notes that Deep Research is still in its early stages and has limitations, including struggling with distinguishing between authoritative information and rumors.
Deep Research is now available on the web version of ChatGPT and will be rolled out to mobile and desktop apps within February. This is the second AI agent launched by OpenAI this year, following the previewed “Operator” tool in January, which can perform tasks like creating to-do lists or planning vacations.
