Ohio State head coach Ryan Day revealed that he was not surprised when Chip Kelly left for the NFL, as they had discussed the possibility of Kelly leaving earlier. When Day hired Kelly as his offensive coordinator a year ago, they talked about the possibility of Kelly pursuing opportunities in the NFL.
Day decided to hire Kelly despite this conversation because he believed Kelly could lead the Buckeyes to a national championship. Now that Kelly has left for the Las Vegas Raiders, Day expressed no ill will and looked forward to reminiscing on their time together when they meet again.
Day and Kelly have a close relationship, with Kelly previously coaching Day as New Hampshire’s offensive coordinator. When O’Brien left Ohio State after just three weeks, Day turned to Kelly, who then joined him in Columbus. Kelly signed a three-year contract as the Buckeyes’ OC, but will cherish memories of their national championship win together and looks forward to hearing about the year they had from Day.
