Serbian Taxi Drivers Bring Home Protesting University Students

Hundreds of taxi drivers in Serbia have organized to give protesting university students a free ride home after a 2-day walk and blockade. The drivers, who came from all over the country, joined forces to pick up the students in the northern city of Novi Sad, where they had been demonstrating against corruption.

The students, who were leading anti-corruption protests in Serbia after a concrete canopy crashed at the train station in Novi Sad on November 1, killing 15 people and injuring two others. The protesters are demanding justice for the victims and an end to government corruption that critics blame for the tragedy.

Taxi drivers, including Sava Jovanovic, who was one of the organizers of the action, hailed the students as “our children” and vowed to bring them home safely. The drivers were greeted by cheering crowds and banners reading “Students will free the world” when they arrived in Novi Sad.

The protests have drawn huge crowds into the streets, with people offering food and refreshments to the students along their route. The taxi drivers’ gesture has been hailed as an example of solidarity and empathy for the protesters.
