Iowa Honors Caitlin Clark with Historic Jersey Ceremony

Caitlin Clark supplied the star power for Iowa Hawkeyes’ 76-69 win over No. 4 USC on Sunday, but the real showstopper was the ceremony to raise her jersey to the rafters at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

The Iowa school honored Clark’s legacy by recognizing her as one of the greatest players in NCAA Division I history, with 3,951 points and two national championship game appearances. Clark’s presence sparked emotions, but she said feeling nervous was a welcome change from the intense scrutiny she faced during her All-American career.

“I kind of just have butterflies in my stomach when I walk into here,” Clark said. “Not so much for a basketball game now, but obviously just to be around everybody and enjoy this environment.”

The ceremony came as Iowa navigated its first season without Clark and a key senior class that included another WNBA-drafted player. The team had been struggling, but Clark’s win over USC marked a significant milestone in the Hawkeyes’ NCAA tournament resume.

Clark was accompanied by celebrities like David Letterman and fans from around the world, who turned out to support her despite the high cost of tickets. Her Iowa roots and support system keep her grounded as she navigates the WNBA and international games.

“I want you to save up for May 4th when I play against Brazil,” Clark joked about an upcoming exhibition game.

Iowa coach Jan Jensen described the day as “perfect” and said everyone in women’s basketball appreciates Clark’s impact. The ceremony capped off a memorable day that showcased Clark’s significance in Iowa women’s basketball history.
