FDA Ups Warning on Walmart Broccoli Recall to “Death Risk”

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has upgraded a Walmart broccoli recall to the highest threat level, warning consumers that the products may cause serious health consequences or death due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

Braga Fresh is recalling 12oz bags of Marketside Broccoli Florets sold at Walmart stores with a specific UPC code and best-by date. The affected products were sold in 31 states, including Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

Consumers are urged to remove the recalled broccoli from their freezers immediately. Although no illnesses have been reported, Listeria monocytogenes can lead to severe health issues, especially for pregnant women, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.

The recall is due to a possible contamination of the product during random sampling by Texas Health & Human Services. Braga Foods has stated that the product is past its expiration date and should be discarded immediately. Walmart has also advised customers to discard the product, citing their priority for customer health and safety.
