A 35-year-old woman from England, Jen Moore, has been living with a painful and mysterious condition for over two decades. Despite being prescribed birth control pills to alleviate her symptoms, she continued to experience excruciating periods. The constant pain left her bedridden for several days each month.
Moore’s journey began when she was 11 years old, experiencing painful periods that made it difficult for her to stand straight. Doctors initially dismissed her concerns, labeling her as “unlucky” and telling her that endometriosis was a normal part of life. However, after taking birth control pills for 22 years, Moore’s symptoms persisted.
It wasn’t until she went off the pill during the COVID-19 lockdown that Moore began to experience more severe symptoms. She visited a physician who performed an ultrasound but failed to detect any endometriosis. Undeterred, Moore paid for an MRI scan herself and was finally diagnosed with endometriosis and adenomyosis.
These conditions occur when the lining of the uterus grows in areas where it should not be. Endometriosis often involves pelvic tissue, can envelop the ovaries and fallopian tubes, and can cause severe pain, impact fertility, and affect menstruation.
Moore’s story highlights the importance of early diagnosis and better support for women living with endometriosis. The condition affects many women, often for years before a diagnosis is made. According to Janet Lindsay, CEO of Wellbeing of Women, there is an urgent need for greater awareness, early diagnosis, and improved treatment options.
