The Iowa Women’s basketball team defeated No. 4 USC 76-69 on Sunday, ending the Trojans’ 15-game winning streak. The win came as part of a celebration for basketball star Caitlin Clark, who had her jersey number 22 retired by the University of Iowa earlier in the day.
Clark, who is now playing professionally, scored an emotional win with her team before being honored with the jersey retirement ceremony. Lucy Olsen led the team with 28 points and Addison O’Grady added 13 points to secure the win.
The Hawkeyes started strong, going on an 18-1 run in the first half. USC responded with a 17-1 quarter of its own, but Iowa matched the Trojans for the rest of the game. The largest lead USC had was 10 points late in the third quarter, but the Hawkeyes scored six consecutive points to tie the game.
In the fourth quarter, Olsen and O’Grady took control, scoring 23 of Iowa’s 25 points to seal the win. Sydney Affolter added 11 points and nine rebounds, while Hannah Stuelke contributed 10 points for the Hawkeyes.
For USC, JuJu Watkins led with 27 points, but struggled from the field, going 8-22. The Trojans’ 15-game winning streak was snapped, and they will look to regroup ahead of their next game against Minnesota on Thursday.
