Target Pulls Back on Diversity Initiatives Amid Pressure from Right-Wing Groups

Target Corporation has scaled back its diversity and inclusion initiatives, reversing years of high-profile commitments made after George Floyd’s murder by police in Minneapolis in 2020. The company, which was once a poster child for corporate America’s efforts to address racial injustice, is now facing backlash from right-wing groups and conservative media outlets.

In 2020, Target committed to spending $7.5 billion on diversity-related efforts, including employee resource groups and programs supporting Black and other minority communities. However, in recent months, the company has faced pressure campaigns from prominent activists, Republican leaders, and conservative media outlets over its Pride Month merchandise and a swimsuit described as “tuck-friendly.”

The backlash led to violent threats against Target employees, damaged products, and instances of removed items from stores. In response, Target opted to remove certain items causing controversy, citing concerns for worker safety.

Target’s quarterly sales fell for the first time in six years following Pride Month in 2023. The company’s decision has been met with disappointment from LGBTQ+ supporters, including Twin Cities Pride, which dropped Target as a sponsor of this year’s Pride festival after 18 years.

Despite the backlash, some Black leaders and suppliers are divided on whether to punish Target, with some calling for boycotts while others believe an immediate response may not be necessary. The NAACP and Rev. Al Sharpton’s group, the National Action Network, have announced plans to review companies before potential decisions on a boycott.

Target remains committed to creating joyful experiences through its products and services, and will continue to partner with Black-owned and minority-owned businesses. However, the company’s recent shift in approach has raised questions about its commitment to diversity and inclusion.
