Gaza’s government is under pressure to secure temporary shelters for thousands of families whose homes were destroyed by Israel, amid a worsening humanitarian crisis. The Government Media Office stated that securing shelters is the “most pressing” humanitarian need in Gaza.
With temperatures plummeting, many Palestinians are forced to sleep outdoors without adequate shelter. Local authorities have called on donors and aid groups to prioritize sending tents and temporary shelters to help address this urgent issue.
Israel has been accused of restricting the flow of aid and shelters to the territory, violating a ceasefire agreement that requires 60,000 trailers and 200,000 tents to be delivered. The office claims that Israel’s actions are “delaying the execution of the agreement” and escalating the humanitarian crisis.
World Food Programme officials have confirmed a surge in aid to Gaza but noted that some Israeli restrictions remain, including on items deemed dual-use for civilian and military purposes.
As tensions rise, concerns over the durability of the ceasefire continue. The US has proposed displacing Gaza’s population, citing widespread destruction, a move Arab states have forcefully rejected. With the initial 42-day truce set to expire on March 1, talks over the second stage – which would see Israeli troops withdraw from Gaza and prisoners released – remain stalled.
The international community remains divided on how to address the escalating crisis in Gaza.
