Karla Sofía Gascón, the first trans person to be nominated in an Oscars acting category, says she will not withdraw from the best actress race despite controversy over past social media posts. The 13-nominated film “Emilia Pérez” has sparked a storm over the old posts, which also touched on subjects including George Floyd’s death and diversity at the Oscars.
Gascón apologized for the posts and said she was not racist, stating that she offered her “most sincere apologies to all the people who may have felt offended.” However, some critics argue that her tweets could harm the film’s chances in the Academy Awards.
The film stars Gascón opposite Zoe Saldana and is set mostly in Mexico. Gascón made history as the first trans person to be nominated in an acting category for her lead role. Despite controversy, Oscar voters have given it a resounding seal of approval.
The Oscars take place on March 2-3 UK time, with “Emilia Pérez” leading the way with 13 nominations. Gascón’s representatives and Netflix declined to comment on the matter.
