Open-source distribution Alpine Linux is struggling to find new server infrastructure and sponsorships after Equinix Metal announced it would sunset its bare metal servers, which have supported the project since long. The crisis affects Alpine’s storage services, continuous integration testing, and development box, forcing the developers to scramble for alternatives. They are seeking colocation space near the Netherlands or rack space, as well as high-performance servers for their storage infrastructure.
The project has relied heavily on Equinix Metal, using over 800TB of bandwidth per month, two servers for CI testing, and one server for development purposes. With this sudden loss, Alpine Linux is exploring virtual machines if necessary to cover the costs. The community is encouraged to donate to help with the migration. More information can be found on the official AlpineLinux.org blog.
