UN Warns of Record Number of Executions by Russian Troops

The United Nations has warned that Russian troops have been killing captured Ukrainian soldiers at an alarming rate. Since August, the UN monitoring mission in Ukraine has recorded 79 executions in 24 separate incidents committed by Russian soldiers. This is despite public figures in Russia calling for inhumane treatment and execution of captured Ukrainian military personnel.

According to Danielle Bell, head of the mission, these incidents have the potential to incite or encourage unlawful behavior due to broad amnesty laws. The UN has also recorded one instance of a wounded Russian soldier being executed by Ukrainian forces last year.

Ukrainian human rights ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets has repeatedly called on the UN and International Committee of the Red Cross to investigate these incidents. The situation highlights the dire need for accountability and protection for captured soldiers in conflict zones.
