A sequel reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is reportedly in the works, with Hulu greenlighting a pilot episode written by Poker Face creators Nora and Lilla Zuckerman and directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao. Sarah Michelle Gellar is expected to reprise her role as the titular character.
The project has been years in the making, with Dolly Parton’s production company Sandollar attached, which produced the original series. Parton confirmed the reboot last year, stating that Hulu was “thinking about bringing it back and revamping it.”
While no other actors from the original series have been confirmed to return, Gellar seems on board after changing her mind about a potential revival. She previously expressed concerns that reboots wouldn’t be necessary for the beloved show.
The reboot will mark the third series in the “Buffyverse,” following the original series and its spin-off Angel. It’s unclear who will join Gellar in the new series, but negotiations are ongoing.
Other shows like Malcolm in the Middle and Scrubs have also recently confirmed reboots.
