Beyoncé won album of the year for her project “Cowboy Carter” at Sunday’s Grammys, securing her most coveted top award in history. The singer, who has been nominated four times before and many felt she was snubbed by the honors, made history as the first Black woman to win the prize in the 21st century.
Beyoncé’s achievement is a milestone in the music industry, with only a few other artists having won the award previously. Her win comes after Lauryn Hill last won the honor 26 years ago.
The show also saw Kendrick Lamar take home two awards for his diss track “Not Like Us,” which became the second hip-hop single to ever win in the category. The Weeknd performed at the Grammys, making a return to the stage after a few years off.
Other winners included Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas, who won their first Grammy for their collaboration on the song “Birds of a Feather,” and Doechii, who took home the award for best rap album.
The show also paid tribute to late producer Quincy Jones, who passed away in November at 91. The ceremony featured performances by Cynthia Erivo, Herbie Hancock, Lainey Wilson, Jacob Collier, Stevie Wonder, and Janelle Monae.
Beyoncé’s speech was not required, but she did speak out on the importance of diversity and inclusion programs that have been scrapped recently in the US.
