Westchester County High School Sports Resume After Wildfire Break

Despite a brief halt due to the devastating Palisades Fire, high school sports has made a significant comeback for some units as the postseason approaches.

On the hardwood and soccer fields, Samohi and Saint Monica teams resumed action after a week-long break. The delay in game play followed winter break, causing teams to go nearly a month without playing multiple games.

The Samohi boys’ soccer team impressed in the regular season, with an undefeated 8-0 Ocean League run and a 17-2-1 overall record. Led by seniors Leon Ivanov (12 goals), Miguel Cano (11 goals), Gabriel Sherman (10 goals), and Felipe Martini (8 goals and 18 assists), the team is well-positioned for the postseason.

The Lady Vikings soccer team, however, had a more mixed season, ending with an 8-8-1 record. Despite this, they secured a spot in the postseason after going 6-1 in the Ocean League.

In basketball, both Samohi and Saint Monica teams are fighting to secure playoff spots. The Lady Vikings have an 18-5 overall record, but struggled against Del Rey league opponents, while the boys team has an 13-11 overall record.

Saint Monica’s soccer squads performed well, with the boys’ team going undefeated in Santa Fe league play. The Lady Mariners basketball teams are led by senior guard Kim Macias, junior guards Sydney Ghobrial and Bailey Prewitt, who have formed a dynamic trio contributing to their team’s success.
