California Governor Announces Special Legislative Session Against Trump Policies

California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a special legislative session to address the state’s concerns over President-elect Donald Trump’s policies. In response to Trump’s win in the U.S. presidential election, Newsom said he expects Trump to pursue “unconstitutional and unlawful federal policies” that would harm Californians.

Newsom stated that California will challenge such policies in court, with a proposed increase in funding for the state’s Department of Justice. The special session is scheduled for December 2, where lawmakers will consider increasing funding for DOJ to protect the state’s values, particularly in areas like reproductive health and climate change.

This move comes as Trump has promised unity in his victory speech, but many Democrats do not believe him. Newsom mentioned that California has a history of filing lawsuits against Trump administration policies during his previous term from 2017-2021. He expects to see additional restrictions on reproductive healthcare, undoing of climate change policies, and withholding of disaster relief funding.

The special session aims to ensure Californians have the support and resources needed to thrive in the face of what Newsom perceives as a threat to the state’s values.
